It just feels like b.s. or someone is trying to get something out of you.

That sounds like YOUR problem, not theirs. Trust a little, why don't you?

WOW. That sounds pretty cynical. Has that been YOUR experience or is that a symptom of your general distrust? Yeah, some compliments may be insincere and manipulative but maybe it's genuine and some people are pretty blunt and speak their minds good AND bad.Is your self-esteem so low that you can't accept ANY compliment as being truth? If so, counseling could help. If not then enjoy the gift of a sincere compliment. Maybe people just want you to LIKE them. What's wrong with that?It means you are a person that has some attractive qualities that others may want you to like THEM as well. Get that chip off your shoulder and you'll be a happier person.

No, I don't hate compliments, but I will say that you stated your question very well and with proper punctuation. Your premise for the question was also presented in a clear, understandable manner. You are obviously educated. I'm telling you the truth which you can easily observe for your self by reviewing what you wrote. Am I trying to get 10 points? Nope, I'm trying to illustrate to you that most compliments are not meant to manipulate. Give the points to someone else.

for some reason ever since I was little, I have such a problem with accepting compliments. I hate when the attention is all on me and when someone compliments me, it means that they have noticed me and that makes me uncomfortable and embarrased! But I have gotten a little better with just saying thank you instead of negating what they said and trying to change the subject!

I love compliments, because I am sure that when someone says a nice thing to me, I deserve it, I don't stop to think otherwise.
Remember, it takes a lot to know how to receive a compliment, but once you are confident enough of yourself, then, it doesn't matter if someone is trying to bribe you, you will know the difference.

It makes me feel awkward, especially when I don't want to compliment back. And when it's something that I hate about myself.

I only hate compliments made by creepy older men trying to pick me up. When I say older, not 10 years, but older than my own father...eww!

I can relate to your thinking in many instances.
