Take you main character/s out of context. Imagine them in some odd/out of the ordinary places or scenarios – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your type of character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.

This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out your characters further and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in your story. You may even come up with multiple story lines and can see if one of them just seems to be the best or easiest to continue/include

Strong well-crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings to be in! :-)

This happens to me all the time. When I can't figure out where I'm going to go with a story, I just walk away from it. Leave it alone for a day or two and do something you like. Read a book, go for a bike ride, practice a musical instrument, call your friends, go mall-crawling. Take a nap. In fact, you can do just about anything but watch TV, which I don't recommend because it'll either stifle your creativity or give you inspiration that will later turn out to be mild plagarism.

Once you've had time to relax and de-stress, come back to your story. Turn off your cell phone, shut your door. Basically, eliminate all distractions. Put on some music that you find relaxing and calming, preferably with a set of headphones. You'll be amazed at how clear everything seems.

you should always make a paragraph by paragraph plan and number hte paragraphs in the margin then if you get stuck you can refer to your plan...
if you haven't done that i suggest you need to ignore the story for a week or two and then go back to it... I write fan fiction and I have had that problem before especially with my longest and most intimate story

What first made you to start writing. In that conclusion lies your answer, your ability will be realised and calculated by that special something that gave you the nudge to go on. Relive things a bit, relax, maybe you're trying to hard.

Think laterally.
Look around the room, do you have a figurine/ornament? Pick it up, look whats written underneath, where is it from? How was it made? Who do you think made it?
Do this for other household objects, toasters, lamps, etc., what do you think about the history behind them?
That should break any block.

Reread the story. Reasses where you wanted it to go, and then get it there.
