do you mean 1/(y+1) + a = 3/y + 1
you need to clarify the question to say exactly what the demoniators are on both sides.
if it is that write it all over the demoniator
{1 + a(y+1)}/(y+1) = (3+y)/y

then multiply both sides by y(y+1) to get the y terms off the bottom

Assume question as:-
1 / (y + 1) + a = 3 / (y + 1)
1 + a.(y + 1) = 3
ay + a = 2
ay = 2 - a
y = (2 - a) / a

Assuming your capital Y and lower case y are the same variable:

y=2/a

Multiply both sides by y and solve.

1/y+1+a=3/y+1
1/y-3/y=1-1-a
1-3/y=-a
-2=-ya
y=-a/-2
y=a/2
