Write each equation in standard form: ax + by = c

2x + 1y = 14
4x - 3y = 8

Multiply the first equation by 3. Add the equations to eliminate the variable y.

6x + 3y = 42
4x - 3y = 8
----------------------
10x = 50
x = 5 and 2(5) + y = 14 and 10 + y = 14 and y = 4.

Answer: The system has a solution at (x, y) = (5, 4). The system is independent ( the lines are not parallel) and consistent (there is a solution).

2x + y = 14
4x - 3y = 8

6x + 3y = 42
4x - 3y = 8-------ADD
10x = 50
x = 5

10 + y = 14
y = 4

x = 5 , y = 4 (consistent and independent)

multiply the first eq by 2 and subtract from the second
4x+3y=8
4x+2y=28

y = 20
x = -13

consistent, independent
