My friend's stomach and breasts have increased in size over the last six months and for obvious reasons I am reluctant to ask her if she is pregnant... so I am wondering about a way to ask her that is less direct or if there are any signs i might be able to notice. Her arms, face and legs are perfectly normally sized still and she is continuing to drink and smoke.

The only reason I think it is possible is because there was some type of pregnancy scare four and a half months ago, but she ended up saying she wasn't pregnant. If she was, however, it would not have been possible for her to get an abortion because she is living in a foreign country where only nationals can have abortions.

I don't want to tell her she's fat - so I guess the best place to start is a nice way to mention the weight gain - ideas?

It is tough to think that she could pregnant and is smoking and drinking, but there is really not much you can do. Depending on how close you are you could try to talk to her about whatever happened with her pregnancy scare. But if she is silent about everything, there probably isn't much you can do other than respect her privacy. Maybe whatever happened to her a few months ago stressed her out and she isn't pregnant, just going through some other stuff.

Take it from me--I've been around a loooooooong time, and have made the mistake of asking about a pregnancy to someone who was just fat. I'm trying to remember her name.
Since that time, my own daughter-in-law had a child while her husband, my son, was working out of town. My husband & I, her mother & I, and several of my friends & I had all thought that she MUST be pregnant, but having already made that mistake of asking once before, plus being "the mother-in-law" persuaded me to bite my tongue.
I still do not regret not having asked her or my son earlier, but it did leave them a bit embarassed. The best they could come up with was, "We were waiting for a good time to tell you." ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Bottom line--say nothing to your fat friend--time will bring your answer without your ever asking.

I'd say her drinking and smoking would be your clue that she probably isn't pregnant. If she is, she sure doesn't care about her baby very much because it might be born with respiratory problems and fetal alcohol syndrome, if she is doing that. I would say your friend is putting on some weight. Is she stressed about living in foreign country? Maybe (if she is showing other signs of stress, because she is going to ask "Why do you ask that?" and you don't want to answer with, "well because you are getting fat.") you could ask her if she is stressed out. But I would say that she probably isn't pregnant due to her drinking and smoking.

she is your friend if you have noticed these things so have other people.you need to talk to her privately and ask her if she is in trouble.tell her you will help her if there is a problem.some women are in denial when they don't know what to do.i do not want your friend to suddenly go in labor and freak out and kill a baby! she should not be drinking or smoking either if she is pregnant.if shes not pregnant then help her by exercising with her and encouraging her to get in shape.if you think something is wrong and she is still in denial tell her you will go to the doctor with her.good luck.

Scary situation. Just think what she might be doing to that baby while she's drinking!

On the other hand, it's not directly your business. Surely she knows what she's doing and chooses, whether fat or pregnant, to continue her lifestyle.

Try saying, "Why, you're positively glowing! What's your secret?" It's hard to take offense at this, and if she's not preggers, she'll think you're being sweet.

If you don't feel comfortable asking her directly, then ask her if she would ever like to have kids and when. If she is she'll tell
