I had to go to the hospital on Saturday because I was having some preterm contractions (I'm 31 weeks). They got it under control with medication that I have to take 3 times a day, and so far everything seems ok. I am still allowed to work and continue my life as normal. I am dilated to 1 cm and 50% effaced. I just would like some other people's experiences with preterm contractions so that I know possibly what to expect.

this is my first baby, I totally was not expecting this to happen, as I've had a textbook easy pregnancy up until this point!

hi there. i was hospitalized at 30 weeks with contractions, i went from 1 fingertip to 1 cm. they gave me lots of meds, kept me 3 days, gave me steriods then sent me home with nothing - full activity level. i was back in the hospital at 33.5 weeks with contractions. they didn't give me meds to stop them, they stopped on their own. at this time i was 3 cm, 50-60% effaced, baby had dropped, lost mucus plug. this baby is still hanging in, at 38.5 weeks.

You're doing well, if you can still work as usual. My contractions started at 32 weeks. I took the pills, too, and was ordered total bed rest. About once a week or so the contractions would be less than 5 minutes apart for an hour. That meant another 2-3 days in hospital. There they would give me shots to stop the labor. Finally, at 36 weeks and 6 days they let me deliver my son. He was 8 lbs 10 oz, cesarean with a few health problems. But he was ready to go home by the time I was, and everything turned out great. All of his milestones, though, were exactly 3 weeks late--his body knew when his birthday was supposed to be, even if we didn't!

Technology and medications may have changed by now, though. My son is about to turn 17 and begging for his driver's license.

I had to go into the Labor & Delivery section of the hospital at 29 weeks because of a kidney stone. The muscle spasms from the stone started to cause contractions. They got it under control with some serious pain medication and a "basket removal" of the stone. They sent me home with pain meds to take to again be sure I didn't get any contractions.

It was scary, but even then the nurse assured me that if I did end up having full labor they would most-likely have no troubles keeping my baby alive. That was nice to know, but I sure am glad my baby stayed put.

During a routine appointment with my son, I was having preterm labor and I didn't even know it. I thought I just had back pain. I had a cervix that measured 1 cm in length. I was admitted to the hospital given steroids to insure his lungs would develop completely. When released I was put on bed rest at 26 weeks. Long story short-my son was born 1 week past his due date. I am grateful for modern medicine, but sometimes I think not knowing every little negative possibility is better for your health.

After I started having contractions at 32 weeks they didn't give me medication to stop them, but not anything to take everyday. So a couple weeks later my water broke and so I had no other choice but to go into labor. I'm sure you won't have the same problem the medication you take daily should stop any contractions. So, you really shouldn't worry.

the same thing happened to me on Monday, I had the IV and 3 shots of Terbutaline that did stop the contractions, but my water did not break and I have a stitch in place to keep me pregnant. I was told by the ER doc that I could have 4-6 contractions in one hour before I needed to come back to the ER. I though it was alot, being that they hurt so bad, I to need to make it to week 37. At week 37 mt stitch will be taken off and they will not stop the contractions, because that is full term. They also let me come one on Monday the same day, I got there around 12noon and was home by 6pm.

Follow your care provider's instructions with regard to medication. I would take off work, if at all possible for at least a week. It adds unneeded stress on you body that is trying to tell you to rest and take care of yourself. I had this happen to me with 3rd pregnancy. At about 6 months had pre-term labor, limited my activity to basic needs of taking care of my family and it stopped. Baby ended up coming full-term. 31 weeks is still to early for baby. The baby needs to fatten up those last 2 months or so for optimum health. Is this your second or third?
