I went through a "gothic" stage. Not extreme, mind you, but definitely a stage. If you had asked me when I was goth, I might have said that at least I was meant to be goth and couldn't change it. But since I only went through the stage for about 4 years, I'd say that it's exactly that- a stage.

However, you're right... your friends shouldn't be afraid of gothic people. Most are just like them except wear darker clothes. I've never met a goth that I didn't get along with. If you're nice to them, chances are they'll be nice to you.

To me, being gothic was more about fitting in, surprisingly. I listened to a bunch of music groups that attracted a lot of "gothic" fans and so I noticed this and tried to change myself. Now, I still love the same bands, but am myself. I'm still drawn to "alternative" stuff, but I ditched the chains and the excessive jewelry and makeup. Not that I still don't wear makeup and jewelry, but not as much.

Most people I went to high school with grew out of the gothic stage once they entered college. There was only one I knew of who continued being gothic. Once you get out into the real world, unless you make your living off of a gothic lifestyle, you begin to realize that while you can still hold onto your individuality, it's best to present yourself in a manner that most people would automatically find acceptable.

'Gothic' isn't a real thing. 'Goth' with a capital 'G' is a barbarian. 'goth' with a lower case 'g', is a person who likes death. Not a suicidal person, but someone fascinated with the many ways of dying. Someone who is very secretive, and although can be a fun 'N' funny person, keeps those qualities hidden. At least out in public. Doesn't really like 'happy' things, but more dark and mysterious things. They know about the bad and embrace it.

goth is very difficult to explain. I suggest reading a book on goth. Because your right, goth people are not bad people. Wanna-be goths that are labeled goth in schools 'N' really know nothing about goth, aren't any better then the people that label them.

Much luck

I am called gothic frequently, just because I like the color black and I wear it alot. I don't think that their is anything that specifically makes someone a true gothic. The dictionary states that "gothic is characterized by gloom and mystery and the grotesque; "gothic novels like 'Frankenstein.' " And if you get passed the way they look, I think most "gothic" people are actually more sincere, trusting, open-minded and interesting than your average everyday person.

They are usually called "Goths."

They are worshipers of Death, weather they are conscious of it or not, (hence they wear its colors, usually black, but occasionally grey or red clothing in the anachronistic style and favor silver jewelery especially with a skull or bone motif, and white face makeup with dark around the eyes,) they do not necessarily hate God, but most do not believe in him or the devil, but may wear a symbol of either for shock value, (favorites are the crucifix, often inverted, and the pentagram, often with the superimposed goats head.)

They usually favor music with a fatalistic theme, (original) punk music, dark emo, death metal etc., but some like classical or odd and obscure music such as "The Damned" and the original Pink Floyd, before Syd Barrett left (listen to "Piper at the gates of dawn.") There is even music classified as Goth.

Behavior varies widely, some are sullen and withdrawn, others are aggressively contemptuous or even "bon vivants" but most find the "normals" or "poseurs" (as they sometimes refer to the "unenlightened" non-Goths,) distasteful, ignorant and urbane. Almost all of them find the occult (especially satanism and vampires,) fascinating even if they can't agree why.

More than anything its a fashion statement...But before you accuse them of being shallow, just remember, BEING "NORMAL" is also a "fashion"...Jocks, preps, geeks, they are all adopted (though more broadly accepted,) modes of behavior that people use to "fit in." There is nothing that gives these "fashion templates" for behavior primacy...Its people imitating people imitating people...And I think everyone might get along better if they understood that now people, and Goths in particular, are trying to break out of the "expected" thought and behavior patterns that keep society from progressing past a 1950's (mixed with hip-hop,) mentality...

I am constantly straddling the fine line between goth and normalcy. But part of me giggles a little while watching horror movies. I've been this way for so long, its gone beyond shock value. But that doesn't mean I'm going to go around hurting people or myself.

Try not to think of gothic people as sad or scary, just realistic. They've seen the veil and pushed it aside while others walk around fooling themselves into an illusion of normalcy.

what makes a prep a prep? a person gay? what makes people like something? being gothic is a way of life, as is anyother "genre" of style, music and interests, and your friends need to shut up and learn to open their minds and love and to stop labeling people. tell them to be afraid of something that matters. tell them to be afraid for the dogs in puppy mills. tell them to be afraid of extinction, global warming, war, terrorism, greed. tell them to be afraid of themselves for judging others. whether we are gay, straight, religious, athiest, black. white, chinese, puerto rican, french, american, deaf, blind, obese, skinny, tall, short, "emo", "hardcore", or are interested in death metal, pop, rab, hip hop, country, classical, we are all different and we are all BEAUTIFUL and we should all be appreciated as such.

its just a fad, people are like sheep, they feel comfort in a group, basically we are still tribal despite our tribes being long gone from our way of life.
But we feel comfortable belonging to a group / tribe, typical examples are football fans, music fans, political groups, church groups etc...etc...
