But you do realise the story is metaphorical and not literal don't you?

God rarely if ever creates something without some kind of purpose (even if it seems insignificant or is unknown to us). Also He does not lie. Per the way that Adam & Eve where created, they wouldn't have needed umbilical cords as we know them to have been created for this *purpose*: the means by which the source of life & sustanance travels to babies en utero. The source of Adam & Eve's life & sustanance was God's creative work (using the dust of the ground & Adam's rib), His direct breath & sustaining power via the Tree of Life. If that is the sole purpose of a belly button & God does not lie, He wouldn't have given them one.
That being said, if on the off chance that a belly button has another purpose that only God knows, maybe it is possible that they had one.

I just want to puke. Why do you religious zealots insist on trying to answer a scientific question?
Now I forgive you the use of the term "adam and eve" because I presume you do not have the benefit of a college education. For "adam and eve" I will substitute "early hominids."
We have belly buttons, the apes have belly buttons, our common ancestor had a belly button and that's why we have one. They are an artifact of the umbilical cord.

No these were the only two people alive not to have belly buttons. They were the first two people ever and in order to have a belly button there had to be an Umbilical cord. They had no parents so they have no belly button.

Adam and Eve did not exist. All humans evolved from 'slime moulds'. It is PROVEN that Adam and Eve never existed, because of mitochondrial DNA, which only passes through the maternal line. If Eve was real, all humans would have identical mitochondrial DNA - and we DONT! There are lots of different types - which shows our maternal ancestors were numerous

The real question is why would you ask this on biology questions? It has nothing whatsoever to do with biology. Adam and Eve are religious myths.

No, they weren't born. Adam was made from soil and Eve was made from Adam's body.

I think it detracts from the story in the Bible to ask such questions.
I know there are groups of believing Christians to consider this story to be literally true. It's my belief, however, that the much more important part of the story is the relationship between God and creation and particularly the relationship between God and humans.
Focussing in on 'realistic' details takes focus away from such importants themes as
* temptation, deceit and betrayal
* love and creation
* our role in God's plan for the world
My final answer - it's not relevant to the story!

What is the point in asking this question?? Your not going to get an accurate answer only guesses.... so save your self some time and points and just come up with a conclusion yourself... based on your thoughts and beliefs.
