I live in Essex and have just finished watching the lightning.
It was pretty good but I would have preferred forked lightning.
The thunder was impressive!
I grew up with a mother who was terrified of storms; she used to put me in the cupboard under the stairs every time there was thunder and lightning.
I grew up being scared of the same thing.
Until I had my son, when I knew I couldn't perpetuate the problem.
We watched storms, saw brilliant forked lightning of various colours. I was hooked! Swallowed my fear and helped my son at the same time.
Good question. Bring on the next storm!

I am in South Essex and at the moment it is flashing and banging. Some of the flashes are really bright. It is bucketing down as well with quite a wind blowing.Storm appears to be going from West to East, out into the Thames estuary and Channel.A big PS> I have since read the other answers above. Many refer to lightening!! Is this an American spelling of the correct English lightning?

Yes I love it too, the raw power of nature. Sheet lightning at night is absolutely phenomenal here, like a massive fireworks display.

I love it....I love watching, chasing and listening....but the big thrill is chasing it...I have gotten some really great pictures while doing so and have never (yet) been in harms way....no lightening or thunder here right now (Clinton, Indiana)

Yeh it was here in south wales earlier. Yeh, i love it, i actually find it comforting and soothing in a wierd sort of way, reminds me of how nature how has dominance over everything and that most of the things we worry about dont really matter.
