well for me, i just start with the base of 10%

if it is 30% off of 25 dollars.. that means it is 10% off.. but THREE TIMES! :)

and finding 10% off i very easy because you just move one decimal place over.
so from 25. it is 2.5

so 10% off of 25 dollars is $2.5 dollars

now since it is 3 times i do quick multiplication in my head

2.5 x 3 equals 7.5

so the sale is 7.5

then i subtract it with my 25 original price (u can use fingers for this!)

and i get $17.5 which is my total :)

The easiest way I find to deal with this is to use a round about method. Ok you gave a price of $25 with a discount of 30%. Take 25 and divided by 3 (this would be 33% off). You get 8.3333333333333. Round to 8.33 and multiply by 2, which equals 16.66. This means you would pay just over $16.66. The actual amount you would pay is $17.50.

Take the zeros off then muliply so 3 * 25 = 75 then move the decimal to where it makes sense (so $75 does not make sense nor does $0.75) so you will get $7.50 off. There are some books that will tell you some other tips for multiplying. Look it up on amazon.com (I think its called Rapid math 30 days to number power)

example $25 X 3 (30%) = 75.00 then move decimal point over one so the discount is $7.50 off of $25

main thing is round it off. Don't take 25 x 30 instead take 25 x 3

The very first answer you received about thinking in terms of 10% is the best. I use that method all the time! I even use it to figure out how much to tip on a restaurant bill. I'll leave 20% because it is easier to figure out than 17% and the waitress appreciates the few extra bucks :)

That would be 25 x .3 or 7.50. If it would be easier for you think in terms of ten. 10% of 25 is 2.50 (just move the decimal one place over, 2.50 x 3 (for 30) is 7.50
