huh? if you're 18, you're legally and adult. many people go through life with out some sort of iD (no DL, no passport), but YOU do have a birth certificate right? That's your proof.

First advice, get an ID! Most states issue IDs through the Department of Motor Vehicles for those adults that don't drive. You usually need a photo ID to cash checks, buy certain materials (cigarettes, spray paint, glue, etc), and should be able to produce ID if asked by an officer of the law.

As far as can you still "act as an adult" that would be yes, but realize that if you can't prove your age and an establishment denies you service that would otherwise be legal for you, you have no recourse. Also, most states refer to "18" as the age of majority, and not an adult since you still can't legally buy or consume alcohol, buy handguns or ammunition for handguns, obtain a police commission and so on and so on, until you're "21", at which point you are considered an adult.

Of course you still act as an adult...

EXAMPLE....I forget my id at home, but I want to get a pack of cigarettes. The store owner refuses to sell me a pack because I do not have ID. Ok, fine, I leave the store and the first person I see on the way out, I ask to bum a cigarette from him.....and I smoke it up right in front of the store. The store owner sees me and asks me to leave.....being a law abiding citizen I leave as he asked. The owner not satisfied with that, calls the cops on me, and the cop stops me down the road and asks me for ID. "Sorry officer, don't have any ID on me." He asks, "what is your name and how old are you ?" I say "john doe, and i'm 18"....he doesn't beleive me and tells me to put my cigarette out,..... I refuse to do so. He says "put the cigarette out, or i'll give you a ticket for uderage smoking"......I say "ok give me a ticket, i'm 18 !". He gives me a ticket, and I show up at the courthouse with my id,...viola! ticket goes away.

Certain activities may require by law that you have an ID....like hunting.

You are required, almost everywhere, to have your ID on you at all times. You just bring your birth certificate, social security card, and a utility bill to the Motor Vehicle Department, and get a state ID.

When you don't have ID on you, you could get arrested for loitering, solicitating, trespassing, prostitution, or any other number of things--I know that because my mom forgot her's one day, and that's what a cop told her.

Not so fast there. You can go to the drivers license bureau and get a non driver ID in many states. I've seen them.

Yes...

However, you may want to pony-up (if necessary) for a wallet copy of your birth certificate, and try to obtain a legal/official photo ID.

It's called playing it safe.
