They say soccer and they call the sport a franchise. They think they have the best league in the world because players nearing their retirement decide to play FOOTBALL in America. They should stick to American sports like baseball.

American views welcomed.

ps I am aware a minority of Americans FOOTBALL fans do know what they are talking about.

All those who are talking about the MLS being inferior, I agree. However, I did not say anything about the MLS.

I know what you mean, a while ago I was frustrated with all of this as well, but I have learned to understand that well... it's just not a way of life in America. So the 'soccer fans' just have a different way of viewing the sport...etc. As for Beckham joining the MLS, that was just because he has this fascination with the USA, and that's okay for him but not all footballers are like that. the MLS is indeed nowhere NEAR La Liga, EPL, Serie A...etc.

I get a bit frustrated too sometimes. I hear people say "I love soccer" and when I ask how much they watch, they say "oh just the world cup if i have nothing else to do".. and their favourite team is always Brasil. Unfortunately, that doesn't just happen in the USA..

As an American Football fan. Did I not get the memo about us having the best Domestic league out there. :)

I guess it should be a compliment that you think so highly of our 12 year old American Football domestic league that you're actually paying enough attention to it and it's supporters.

As to the individual who said that soccer is rammed down the throats of the American Public who exactly is doing this ramming? ESPN, Fox Sports? Can anyone actually recall the last time the US National Team was shown on Sports Center other than at the scrawl at the bottome of the screen. I wish we were getting more MLS Highlights in stead of Neckcar or golf.

I've never heard American "soccer" fans call the sport a franchise or think that we have the best league in the world. MLS teams are known as franchises but no one has ever called the sport a franchise. How can the sport itself be a franchise? That doesn't make much sense. I'd like to know where you're getting this from. You also may not have said the MLS specifically but when you that "They think they have the best league in the world because players nearing their retirement decide to play FOOTBALL in America" you are clearly refering to the MLS. It's quite obvious you are refering to the MLS. Either way, I've never once witnessed any American say or even think you mentioned. This is a rather poor generalization on your part. And so what if we call the sport "soccer"? What choice do we have when there is already a sport here with that name? This tells me that you don't know much of anyhthing about the history of football. This also tells me that you didn't do any research if any at all for this question. The word "soccer" was invented by an Englishman named Charles Wreford-Brown according to wikipedia.com. What we call football came from rugby, After rugby was introduced here in the US some changed it a little and added things to it. At the time this style became prefered by most Americans involved in the sport and back then, rugby was also known as rugby football and it was known as a type of football. The name football stuck with our version of rugby and was established as a sport here before football (soccer) was. I suggest you go and look up "soccer" on wikipedia.com and see for yourself.
I also think that you saying Americans should stick to American sports like baseball is a very ignorant and very arrogant thing for you to say. I can do that, too, you know. I think that given your lack of knowledge of football (soccer) history and your generalized and false statements about Americans, that you should maybe stick to sports like cricket and rugby. I am also aware that a minority of American FOOTBALL (soccer) fans do know what they are talking about but I'm really not at all sure that you do.
So no, American "soccer" fans don't annoy me, with me being one of them, but rather what annoys me are people like you that post questions like this without knowing the facts or doing any research.

Most of the MLS fans don't think it's the best league in the world . We just think it's a decent 12-year old league that is growing and has great potential. I will admit MLS quality used to be awful 10 years ago but we kept supporting it (that's what true football fans do: support their local team/league through thick and thin) and watched it improve every year. If we didn't support the league, it would have gone down without a doubt. And, that would basically kill the beautiful game in this country.

By the way, I watch the premiership games on TV in the morning and go to the MLS games at night. I don't have to choose one or the other.

And the funny thing is that Soccer was a slang derived in Britain for Association Futbol.

Believe it or not....the game is very popular in the states due to the large base that most of this country is made up of cultures from around the world. Just because its not in your mainstream media does not mean it ain't popular.

I am not sure where your getting the fact that we have the best league in the world. Its a very young league and at least I know there is still a long way to go before this league can gain any respect. MLS is not being marketed right and the game play needs improvement..a lot of it...and thats where these so called "retired" players come in. I consider them players with invaluable experience.

Juan Pablo Angel, ex Aston Villa striker, is having a lot of fun in the states right now.....9 goals in 7 games.....
I don't consider him retired....I won't be suprised when his time in the States is up....he'll go back and play for River Plate...or professional Futbol in Colombia....

American view;
1. Your a damn fool.
2. You annoy ME.
3. It's called a truck not a lorrie.
4. One puts his or her luggage in the trunk of the car, not the boot.
5. Grow up
6. If you took a poll, which you did not, I am sure the vast majority of Americans would not say that the MLS is the best league in the world. Are you just making things up or are you just plain stupid.

this is why yahoo should add another tab, contacts, fans, idiots.

And again you have shown your stupidity. I will quote you here, " They think they have the best league in the world because players nearing their retirement decide to play FOOTBALL in America" and yet you now claim to not have mentioned the MLS. Hmmm, just what LEAGUE were you referring to then ? Idiot can't even remeber what he's talking about.

PS; it's a rare person who gets me to start name calling. I guess you just pushed the right button.

It's always petty to throw "all American's" into one pot. It's a big country and not everyone grew up with just AYSO.

America is made up of lots of players and fans who learned the sport from quality sources in Europe, South, and Central America. I'm an American and I learned the game from Mexicans and Argentinians and I've played in men's leagues against former pro's and national team players from England, Germany, Korea, Cameroon, Nigeria as well as guys who've played in the USL and of course college. Lot's of American guys know the game pretty damn well.

Where have you been getting your info? Television or intuition?

Really, I don't know of anyone who would call the MLS the "best league in the world".
Maybe you shouldn't stereotype before asking a stupid question!!!!

And yes, I am an AMERICAN. So now you have my view.

I'm an American soccer fan, and I will be honest with you: the American league, MLS, is crap. Please don't lump all American supporters together. There are many of us, myself included, who get up at four in the morning to watch quality football from England. I don't know one "knowledgeable" soccer fan who would claim that we have the best league in the world. At best, MLS can compare to an English League 2 side. Probably closer to Conference.
