Good question. I believe that Mark David Chapman was just a crazy man that thought he was John lennon. Too bad, John Lennon was a great musician.

Mark David Chapman was, by all accounts, completely insane. His obsession with The Catcher In The Rye was testament to this.

Chapman was a fan of the Beatles, Lennon in particular. However, as he grew older, he became disillusioned with the pop star. Lennon's disregard for religion had an effect on Chapman, stirring the hatred to a boil. Lennon preached about peace, love and understanding, as well as imagining a world with no possessions, while he owned mansions, ranches, cars, etc. Chapman saw him as a phony, and the hatred kept growing.

His obsession with The Catcher In The Rye only fueled this. The book's main character, Holden Caulfield, has a deep hatred for what he calls "phoniness." Chapman saw Lennon as phony. And he took it to its most extreme.

Chapman was reading a copy of the book at the scene of the crime when police showed up. He didn't run. He just sat there and waited for them. He wanted the notoriety.

The government didn't have a thing to do with it.

A crazed fan. Nixon thought Lennon was a threat in the early 70s, but Nixon was a nut, too. And by 1980, the Vietnam war was over and Lennon was a stay at home dad. I wouldn't imagine Reagan's crowd especially liked him, but I can't imagine they would try to do him harm, either.

Mark David Chapman. Maybe it was that one line in his song "Imagine" when he sang "no heaven or hell". Maybe the guy was just a very faithful, religious fan.

What seems more likely, that is usually the answer. So, yes I believe Chapman killed him all by himself.
