Is this all just an exercise in personal promotion?

Hey Mrs. B
Personally speaking, I have found myself in both categories. Before Y!A, I had to search the web for the info to help me in what ever quest I was on at the time, now that I have become knowledgeable in certain categories, I do like to share with those who ask, because I know how frustrated I got when looking for an answer. Ultimately, my first response is to answer with personal experience, BUT because of human pride, I have to be careful to not over step the boundaries of 'personal promotion' which we all do without even knowing it.

Here in Y!A, depending on which forum, if the question has been answered adequately by someone, I give a thumb up & move on.

Other questions like this one, is from my own personal opionion, then again you asked :-D!

This question gives me a horrible churning feeling. Wherever possible I do use personal experience and I am sincere but sometimes I'm scared of giving too much away. I try to avoid giving specifics which can mean I dress an answer up in the wrong way. I also know that I'm guilty of trying too hard. I sometimes try to sound more intelligent/witty/light-hearted than I really am, which is a form of self promotion and horribly vain (although I hadn't seen it like that until now and I am squirming.) This makes me confront the fact that some of my answers have come from the mistaken belief that I might fool the asker. Should've known better....

some questions i answer from personal experience or from my own knowledge if i know the right answer. Other questions i just voice my opinions and advise what i think is right. I like to think i ca help people or at least put another perspective on their options and / or the way they are thinking. I dont think it is a chance for personal promotion. If that was the case i would only answer questions i KNEW the answers to and only stick wihtin those categories but i dont, i just stick to the main question page and help where i can!!

Not just, but also. I don't do it because I'm saintly. I do it partly because it satisfies my already sizeable ego and partly because it genuinely does give me satisfaction to help people who really need help, especially when I am one of the extremely few people who are capable of providing that help competently. The most valuable and time-consuming help I provide is offline - to people who have made initial contact with me through Answers - and it remains private between me and them. So no - it isn't *just* an exercise in self-promotion: if it were, I wouldn't put time in without even 10 points to look forward to as a reward.

When I advise, it is always from personal experience. And when I help in other ways, I only provide the help that I am fully competent to give.

A bit of both, but self promotion only 1% of the time on a day when I've had too much coffee. I love helping others and I used to answer a gajillion random questions for a living so this makes me feel so ... fulfilled in a way. Sounds sad, but it feels like the old times. I take it sincerely but have fun with it too.

Interesting question..I answer at times through personal experience..
I believe in passing on what I've learnt.
I would never be so presumptuous in thinking i can advise anyone in the way to go...i can on the other hand share some pitfalls maybe....
It's entirely up to the individual whether they agree or disagree with my answers. My desire is just to make a difference in anyway i can.. : x )

I suppose its halfie halfie - cos as im not married nor have had children does that mean i shouldnt try to help people with relationship/kids problems. Mostly people want an impartial ear - or have i got that wrong? And when it comes to relationships well...i can try - and when it comes to kids i say put them all in a sound proofed cellar and feed them well until they are 18 and ready to leave home :0D

I am getting on in years and I just want to pass
on some advice from the things that I have
experienced. If other people answer questions
better than I could I leave it alone. It's not an
ego thing for me, or points, just a desire to be
helpful.
