They both deserve to be in the hall of fame. Yes Rose did bet on baseball and isn't a good guy but he has the most hits in MLB history. It's obvious that Bonds used steroids but when he did they weren't illegal in baseball. Now that they are illegal he has not tested positive. Guys used to use speed to get amped up for games and some of them are in the hall of fame. Gaylord Perry used something like KY Jelly to make his pitches move weird but he was never caught. In my mind Perry has done worse than Bonds because he was actually breaking a rule when it was a rule. It's the baseball hall of fame not the good citizen hall of fame. There are racists and womanizers in the hall of fame but they can't let a guy who bet or used steroids in.

BARRY BONDS PERIOD! Pete Rose signed a agreement as a manager stating that he would never bet on the game of baseball. He dishonored that agreement and dishonored himself as well. Why in the hell would you want a man like that in the hall with great men who played an honored this game with respect and integrity? He doesn't deserve the honor. And just so you know. Baseball no longer considers Pete Rose to be and issue at all. The matter of Peter Rose and baseball and been officially closed! So stop asking and whinning about this moron getting into the hall. It's not going to happen.

On baseball statistics alone, both should get in.
One thing to keep in mind- nothing is stopping the writers from putting both guys in the hall of fame, although if they elected Rose he'd have to be reinstated. While I don't think baseball will ban Bonds, I don't think he can currently get 75% of the writers unless he admits his guilt, which probably then would merit a ban. I think the true baseball fan doesn't need a plaque in Cooperstown to tell him or her who was great, and although Rose was a moral disgrace, he was a great player, as Bonds may be a cheater but is also one of the best ever to play, and was pre-steroids.

I have already answered this one in one form or another, but I will do so again.
Pete Rose bet on baseball, he bet on his own team. Now, whether he bet for them or against them is irrelevant.
If you bet against them, well, it's not too hard to see the issue there, If he bet for them, then he make make decisions (to win money) that he wouldn't have made in order to win a particular game.
When you are gambling, you may "need" to win a particular game, regardless of the outcome of the balance of the year. However, you ask any manager and see if they would want to win a single game at the risk of the entire season with their closer, a starter, a key player and they would say no.
If Rose bet on the Reds to win, they were winning, but the opposing team looks like it would pull it out, he may bring in his closer for 2 or 3 innings (something that he wouldn't do in a normal circumstance) and risk injury to that player.
Rose knew it was against the rules, which is why he lied about it and didn't come clean for 15 years.
He does NOT belong in the hall of fame.
Also, he wasn't a great hitter, his career average is .303. He has the most hits, sure, but also the most at bats, games, plate appearences, etc.
It's like saying Nolan Ryan is the best pitcher in history because he has 5700 K's and 7 no hitters.
Where really, he isn't in the top 10.
Bonds cheated as well. However, unlike Rose, when got, he got banned right away. They are allowing Bonds to continue to contribute to Baseball. You can't allow him to continue for as long as he is able then say "You can't go into the HOF".
His #'s, steroid influenced factored out is definitely worthy of the hall of fame.
I don't condone what he has done, but it's the inability of this commissioner to act that will allow him to get on the card.

I think it says VOLUMES that so many people say that what Bonds did was worse because 'all Rose did was bet on the game'. Steroids have been TOTALLY mishandled by baseball. They should be outlawed and anyone found taking them should be banned for life. That being said, in the pre-steroid era there was only one thing a player could do to be automatically banned from baseball and that was to bet on the game. Everyone from the greenest rookie to the sagest old coach knew it. Rose broke that rule as a MANAGER, so was banned. As you say, Bonds hasn't been convicted of anything because Commissioner Selig and others blew the call, so he will probably go in. Alas.

Pete Rose. He was the fiercest competitor EVER and his transgressions didn't affect the way he played (unlike steroids). He has huge cajones (and a gambling problem) to bet on his team to win every night. Can't fault the guy for always playing 110%.

I think both are more than deserving of the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is for accomplishments on the field; it's not the 'Hall of Good People".
