My mom gave it to me a week ago. It's in good condition. No stratches, no dents. It's almost brand new. The carpet needs to be shampooed, though. The AC does not work, though. Are there any re-calls or anything major I should be aware of? By the way, this is my first car.

To find out if there are any unperformed recalls, call your local dealer's service department with your 17 digit VIN and they can look up to see if it has any.

The only way the factory can notify owners of vehicle recalls is if they have the current owners address on file. Many times, this information isn't updated with subsequent owners, so vehicles may have a recall on them that has not yet been fixed sicne the owner just never knew about it.

Usually, if it has been serviced or repaired at a dealership, they'll check it for any recalls while it's there. However, many second owners have never had their vehicle to the dealer if it was not under warranty.

What engine is in the car?
2.0L 5spd? 2.4L Auto? or the 2.5L Auto?

Assuming an automatic transmission because those were the most popular the first thing I would do would be to change the automatic transmission fluid.
You could check it first to make sure it is ok, but on almost any used vehicle with an automatic transmission it is a very safe bet that the previous owners never had the fluid changed. This fluid is just as important (if not more) than changing your engine oil.
Many many many transmission problems can be avoided (or fixed) with maintaining the fluid.

Other than that. These cars are great. (I personally have a 96 Plymouth Breeze). The AC could just be low on coolant - it uses the newer (and easily available) coolant so you could pick up a kit for roughly $20 and do this yourself. Some of the kits will come w/ a gauge so you can measure the pressure. Follow the directions on the kit and you won't have any problems. If the pressure is low, the AC's condensor won't even spin (safety thing to avoid damaging the condensor).

Keep up with the general maintenance and you should have minimal/no trouble with this and any future cars.

Usually if there was a recall they will send you a letter. But just in case here is a site that you can look it up, just fill in the pertinent information

Good car but with an weak air conditioning system. The evaporator leaks. Not cheap to fix. Don't bother with the salvage yards because the ones there leak too.
