Actually I know two people with that name.

1. My father-in-law is John Smith, who's also the pastor of my church.

2. We just had a senior graduate from the high school I'm at named John Smith. His voice was as smooth as an ice sculpture.

It's not so much that John Smith is common as the first name John is very common, and Smith is incredibly common that when you combine them it's a common name.

Muhammad is a much more popular name worldwide as well.

Not personally, but I do kind of feel sorry for people with that name. so unoriginal. I think most of them are Jrs or named after someone in their family.

Johnson is a common last name where I live, so I guess there are a lot of John Johnsons.

I went to school with John Smith. He sat behind me in class. Pretty cool guy. Haven't thought of him for years until now. Wonder what he is doing now and what he is like.
