In 2004, Culpepper had 5123 total yards, more than any other NFL player has ever had. He did this in Randy Moss's worst season as a Viking, long after Cris Carter had retired, with no running game to speak of, and with Nate Burleson as his #1 receiver.

Obviously, the standard explanation of "Daunte Culpepper was never any good and the only reason it looked like it was because he had Randy Moss" doesn't cut it. What explanation is there for this historically great season that Culpepper had?

He was a great quarterback. He would still put up great numbers, had he not been injured. The guy can throw and run. He does not get much credit for his arm, yet the numbers speak for themselves.

You're right as far as your comment about his performance after Moss. Randy Moss didn't make Daunte Culpepper, and Culpepper didn't make Randy Moss.

However, to answer your question, you have to look at two things. The strengths of Culpepper and the defenses he played.

Daunte Culpepper, for all of his faults, has a cannon for an arm and throws a beautiful deep ball. That's why he averaged so many yards a game passing in 04. Randy Moss and Nate Burleson are both go-deep, stretch the field receivers. Daunte Culpepper is deep-ball quarterback.

Also...he played in the NFC North. He got to play against Detriot, Green Bay, and Chicago (remember...they were awful then) twice each. Not to mention playing in the weaker NFC.

Culpepper had a great season in 04 based upon his knack for the deep ball and his knack for playing baaaad teams.

i do no longer think of he willl be traded quite he wil be released like Danute Culpepper asked. some places how ought to bypass to is the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. i ought to be certain the Cleveland Browns signing Culpepper to play the early element of the season. yet i think of that's extremely no longer likely with the aid of fact he will value too lots funds and that i do no longer think of they even want him. The Chicago undergo want an invaluable quarterback. yet i do no longer think of that they are going to sign Culepper. Rex could have a greater consistent twelve months and lead Chicago to a various branch call. Tampa Bay have already made to many tries in the low season to get quarterbacks. With Jeff Garcia, and Jake Plummer (who in all probability won't play). there is not any doubt Garcia is that communities quarterback. So this is going to come right down to the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens. The Lions will sign him. this is going to come down who will want him greater. The Ravens are extremely joyful with McNair and the Lions want a quarterback. With a quarterback that would throw a deep ball i will see the Lions contending for a .500 checklist

I had Culpepper in fantasy that year and won my league, so I've always watched him. He spreads the ball around--ala Tom Brady. He throws high percentage passes and has a high completion rate. Supposedly a high completion rate (over 65%) is the earmark of a successful QB. Note that he can't win big games--no conference or NFL titles. I've read that he scored terrible on the Wonderlic--he also didn't have the intelligence that the big Florida schools were looking for and ended up at Central Florida. So it's not his brain, but his brawn and accuracy.

Randy Moss being tripled teamed drew the coverage away from the other receivers making it much easier to read the coverage and find the open receiver.

I agree with you. That was indeed quite some season. I think Culpepper's problem might be that he's an egocentric idiot who is difficult to work with. I read an interview a while ago where they asked him who his favorite QB was, and he said "me," then they asked him who the greatest player in NFL history was, and he said "me"... you get the idea.

I think it might be that his problem isn't that he's not talented, but that he has a huge ego and he's a bad teammate.

Scott Linehan.
For some reason, Culp really related to Linehan, his offensive coordinator at the time. This guy is a great athlete, he just needs the right guy and the right scheme to get it done.
