These other people don't know what they're talking about. It's one of the few words in English that doesn't change when it changes tense.

I set it on the table yesterday. (past)
I will set it...
I have set it...

Get the idea?

Well it USED to be the word with the most listings in the Oxford English Dictionary.

But according to OED's "revisions" listings, that is no longer the case. In their third edition, it has been overcome by

"make"

Here's what they say:

"For many years the verb to set has been cited as the longest entry in the OED. But a recheck shows that it has at last been toppled from this position. The longest entry in the revised matter is represented by the verb to make (published in June 2000). However, it is quite possible that set will regain its long-held position at the top of the league of long words when it comes itself to be revised.

"In ranking order, the longest entries currently in the online Third Edition of the OED are:
make (verb - revised),
set (verb),
run (verb)
take (verb)
go (verb)
pre- (revised)
non- (revised)
over- (revised)
stand (verb)
red
point (the noun - revised

It's one of those words that has a zillion meanings and, if I were to guess, set might be the word in the English language that has the most different meanings.

yes, "Set" has the most meanings described in the dictionary. A little three letter word has many meanings.
