ALL PHILOSOPHERS ARE INSANE!
Seriously...Unless they separate themselves from their own thinking, most philosophers are TRYING TO FIND TRUTH, USING THE SYMBOLS OF LANGUAGE AS A MEASURE AND MEDIUM...Read some philosophy, tell me if at some point they seem to be drifting off the deep end or not...
Truth can only be APPROXIMATED in the medium of language, and the philosophers that don't fully grasp that usually go nuts...Truth comes from within, which is why I prefer art to philosophy...It awakens the possibility of truth without trying to classify or prove it...We all create our own {ReALitY] anyway, so YOUR truth may not line up with mine.
Nietzsche, Marx, Hobbes, were all accused of insanity. But "sanity" itself can be questioned, it is defined by normality, and who can say that the "normal" state of mind is not also insane? Is the relentless pursuit of material wealth sane? Most people never question the existence of God or the nature of human behavior. Is that sane?

it depends on your veiw of insanity. im sure when plato was around, there wasnt a mental institution to check into. theres a saying that if u think you are insane- your not because you still feel and have you mind enough to doubt your actions. hey- i read a good book about the history of philosphy durring the school year. its in the form of a book- really interesting and all. its called "Sophies World" you should check it out.

The previous poster is mostly correct: Friedrich Nietzsche did have a breakdown, but did not die shortly thereafter-- in fact, he lived for about a decade in a disturbed, often near-vegetative, state.

I stand corrected - the following poster is correct. Nietzsche lived for about a decade after his breakdown.

It's not easy being sane in insane places. Who determines insanity?
