There really are not a lot except for both being in the same country and having the same money. There were two very different and distinct city states prior to Spain becoming a nation. They have different architecture and even a different language (Catalan is spoken in many homes in Barcelona).

For the casual tourist, there isn't a lot of difference. However you only have to be there for a few weeks to see at there really is one.

I agree with bcn_mimosa, Barcelona is a much more eclectic place to visit. I lived in Spain for 6 months and visited both Madrid and Barcelona several times. There are some cool things to see in Madrid: El Prado, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, Parque del Retiro, and of course El Museo del Reina Sofia which houses my favorite piece of art, Guernica by Picasso. However, like Mimosa said, Barcelona is much more aesthetically pleasing and has a diverse background. If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Barcelona.

Both are in Spain, both have good soccer teams, both are very proud of thier cities...

but i´m not totally sure yet.... i´ve been in madrid for almost 5 months now, and i´m going this weekend to barcelona for the first time...

looking at the maps, Madrid is much bigger... Madrid is beautiful, i don´t know how a city can be more beautiful than madrid but maybe i´ll find out this weekend....

What can I say? I had to choose between living in Barcelona or Madrid and I chose Barcelona, even though everyone recommend me not to because of being bilingual. I honestly think that is just more culture to learn, and I wouldn't be able to live in a city without beach. Also, Barcelona is more modern and I prefer the architecture and weather (Madrid is much hotter in summer and much colder in winter) but still, Madrid is also a beautiful city with many things to offer (except the football team....Barça forever!)

That they are big cities. other then that they have different. Barcelona Is Catalan before being Spanish really, the language is different( Catalan first then Spanish), mind you i am not generalizing , i am just giving my opinion since i live in Barcelona & have gone several times to madrid)... But Overall Barcelona is a much more beautiful city , being that it has it all.. Near the mountains, beaches, great sightseeing, great Food, and are Bilingul ( catalan then spanish).. So if you decide to go to One of the two, Come to Barcelona....

Take care..
