Your question is a bit missing in information. YOu do not say whether the stolen objects were stolen by others or by the employee himself.

If the employee is the one accused, the employer should call the police. So, this would lead us to the fact that the items were stolen on the employee's "watch" and the employer is saying that the retail value is lost and is therefore making the employee responsible for the missing revenue.

In most retail operations, this just doesn't happen. The overhead is structured in such a way as to offset any loss by theft. There are some places where the employer has a contract with the employee which states this clearly. If there is nothing in writing to this effect, the employee should contact the local or state wage control board and see if this is even allowed under their jurisdiction.

The only way an employer can charge an employee for stolen items is if they have concrete proof that that employee actually stole the items, or had some connection to the items being stolen.

If the employee stole the items, then he could be compelled to pay restitution. If not, then the employer would have to prove that the employee was somehow in cahoots with the thief in order to seek payment for the stolen items.

Not legally. But some employers give the employee the choice of paying for the items (and quitting) or calling the police and being fired.

This is totally unfair! Are there mirrors and video cameras, etc. in the store? That boss sounds like a total boor! He needs two people in the store, one to work the store area and one to monitor customers. I would quit if I were you!

Unless the person took it no
he can fire this person for not paying attention....
If he threatens with legal action remind him that he has insurance and now would be the time to use it
And if he dosn't have insurance...sucks for him

Friend of mine is a cop and he says they arrest people all the time for this.
