The word "philosophy" is derived from the Greek root words for "love" "knowledge".
So, the "essential ingedients of philosophy" are the "love of knowledge". Its cousin is "science" "to know".
Philosophy is the study of how Man reacts to and acquires knowledge from the Universe (the World and everything in it). Primarily is the relationship of Man to his God.
Not only is it an attempt to understand, it is an attempt to improve life.
Start with Socrates, Plate, Aristotle, work your way forward in time to include Marcus Aurelius, Bertrand Russell and don't forget Machivelli and others. Also, read Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto; then read the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution....
