I'm thinking of buying wi-fi for my laptop computer. Is it possible to buy a wireless internet connection though say a cell phone company such as t-mobile or verizon and use it through them? Setting cost aside, how would that work in terms of hardware? I've heard that you need to put a card or something in your laptop in order for it to connect. Does it connect via satellite? Would I be able to use in wherever I go, or only at certain hot spots determined by the company?

Thanks!

Yes. it is possible, and the cost is not that expensive. Sprint, Verizon and Cingular (Att&t?) all offer similar ways of connecting through a laptop PC card. These are typically referred to as mobile broadband cards or aircards,as they connect using cellular towers, and the speeds range from 400Kbps up to 2Mbps. The cards are usually free with a two year agreement and the monthly service runs about $50 for unlimited data.

You can purcha$e $attellite connection$ through T-moble and the like$, but u$ually the price tag i$ a good rea$son to avoid it.

You would have to add a card to your PC to receive the sattelite signal. You can get the signal anywhere that the sattelite covers (which is 99% of the USA).

But usually price is what prevents people from going this route.
