Actually what he said was, "Don't focus on the finger, or else you might miss all that heavenly glory". What he was saying was don't be too narrow minded. The finger itself merely points the way to something much greater. However, if you are forgetting things a more practical solution may be at hand. Jot things down on a small notebook. Or organize your tasks so that you can accomplish them with less effort. If you need both ground beef and kitty litter. Write it down so you can get both at the same time.

Ah, the first question is easier: that's what "focus" is all about, paying attention to ONE THING to the exclusion of all else. One must train oneself to be able to concentrate thouroughly.
As to the second part, I haven't trained to be a fighter, just in self defense, but I would say that is most likely correct: if one concentrates on the fighter, one will not see what is going on (and perhaps get boxed into a corner).

He was talking about negative space as an object. If you can shift your attention to the object of negative space, you aren't watching on object darting around (a finger) but a larger object that is changing slightly (the finger moving). Why do you forget other things when you focus? The human brain can only hold in attention 7 (+or- 2) items, but those items can be complex concepts, such as negative space.

That is because you are focusing on the object with a loose concentration. If your mind is clear (not half a sleep), and you are concentrating on everything you receive with your senses, you will remember well, what you were doing before and after.
