Lyrics certainly are a form of poetry, but all poetry does not have to follow a specific rhyming pattern....and neither does lyrics. It is as much a compatibility to music that make the lyrics, where in poetry it is the flow/visualization of the words.

Most of the time, yes. Phrases that rhyme are far easier to remember than phrases that do not.
Words that rhyme often complement the melody of the singing part to a song. They follow the natural contours of a melody, creating a pleasing musical effect.
Rhyme helps the listener to guess which word is coming next and understand the lyrical message. This can be very useful if you're listening to a singer in a theatre or noisy club!
Rhyming words tend to stir us emotionally, giving weight to our thoughts.

Lyrics don't nessicarily have to rhyme but most of them sound better when they do. There is no rule about writing lyrics, as long as they have some form of flow they will make a decent song.
Most artists use rhyming lyrics because when lyrics rhyme they are more catchy and they tend to make the song sound better, but i tend to think alot of songs have terrible rhymes in them, which can make the song sound EXTREMLY tacky.

When writing lyrics, one doesn't have to rhyme; it's all based on personal preference and the flow of the song. If the song works better unrhymed, it shouldn't rhyme, but if it sounds better rhyming, go ahead. It can be difficult to rhyme and make it sound good though, so sometimes it's wiser to just leave a song unrhymed.

I am a songwriter/lyricst myself. I've read lots of books about the art of songwriting.
There are no real guidelines or rules that you have to follow when writing a song. They do not have to rhyme. Usually, they rhyme if their upbeat. Slower songs are the ones that never seem to have a rhyme to them. Although, some slower ones ryhme every other line.
Hope that helped :]

No. I wrote a song last friday, and not the whole thing rhymed. A song should be from the heart, and if your heart doesn't feel like rhyming then don't.

No they don't have to rhyme but they have to flow with the meter and melody of the music.
If its not rhyming....it has to tell a tight story.
