It can be frustrating trying to stop spam emails once you start receiving them. As a poster above points out, they usually are from a bogus email that they change with each new email so blocking individual emails usually does no good. Most email email sevices have spam blockers that, if turned on, will help some with varying degrees of success. Usually your email is obtained by these spammers when you subscribe to certain websites' newletters or by registering with the site with your email. They then give out (sell) your email, along with others, to other sites that email you with offers. The spammers will buy a huge list of emails and then send the spam out to the whole list. Make sure your email is set to block spam. The email it "blocks" as spam will be sent to your bulk folder instead of your inbox. You can then quickly look in your bulk folder weekly to make sure any wanted emails were not accidently blocked. If you find a wanted folder in there you can mark it as safe and it will be moved to your inbox and any further emails from that sender will go to your inbox. When you get spam in your inbox be sure to mark it as spam, which will help the filter identify future spam. Also try to think of any websites you may have given your email address (they may or may not send you occasional emails- if they do send emails, at the bottom of the email should be a link to change your settings). Go to their site, sign in, and change your email settings (usually listed under preferences). Change the settings to reflect that you DO NOT want them to share your information. Usually there will be a box that asks if you want them to share your info with "other companies" or something like like. Also be mindful of sharing your email address with future websites and DO NOT respond to the scams. Even if you have no intention of being scammed, at the very least, replying to a message will guarantee that you will get more emails

What you did to cause this was very simple - nothing. The spammers will often just send random e-mails to weird addresses in the hope of accidently finding a "live" one. When they did not get a "failure" from your address, they knew it was "real". Then they turn around and start selling it to other spams for a couple cents an address.
Any time you get such an e-mail, add it to your block mail list. With Yahoo mail, this is done by marking it as spam. Over time, the program will learn what to block. Also check the "Help" section of your program for any other tips it has on how to "filter" your e-mail. Different programs have different ways of blocking unwanted e-mail.
The ultimate solution is to abandon that account and get a new one. If it is a free account, simply create a new one, e-mail everybody one last time from the old account with the new address, and then delete the old account. Most people find they have to do this about once every 12-18 months.

One option is to set a rule so that mail from anyone not in your contact list (safe senders list) is considered spam, and automatically sent to the trash folder, or quarantine folder, where you can doublecheck.
You cannot easily stop spam once it starts. However, some services like gmail/googlemail do an excellent job at filtering out the spam so you never see it.
