i said god today and my step-dad told me not to cuss in front of him i was like WTF!?!?!?

One of the Ten Commandments is to not say God's name in vain. Now there's a few names involved there and if you consider God's name to be "God", then saying that as an expression of frustration or amazement or basically for any other reason than calling on him or talking about him is using His name in vain.
The reason why that's bad? It's because the respect for that name and by extension- the being it belongs to, is lost and people become desensitized to God's impact in life. Saying His name when you're annoyed with someone not using their blinker in traffic would be one example.

Baby gurl , did you say it in an irreverent manner? For example did you say like God,I f**kin hate this!, or did you say God, I hate this. Your tone of voice can give you away on how you were feeling and maybe your stepdad picked up on this and thought you were taking God's name in vain or not taking it for the value the name deserves from us. Now I am not taking sides here but I do believe when you said WTF you were a little upset at him for making a big deal about it. You are still a good person and a treasure to him and to your mom and I like you too.

It's in the bible, though shall not take the lords name in vain. It's one of the commandments.

Depends on how you use it...taking the Lords name in vain is considered sinful, ergo cussing. GD is taking his name in vain, God bless you after a sneeze is not..all goes to your motivation . And you know wtf is cussing...using initials don't matter..

Yeah, I hate that. Religious people think that your saying the name in vain, or some stupid crap like that. I say who cares, God doesn't care if you say his/her name.
