i guess the best way to put it is that im trying to restore the secondary hard drive data on my Thinkpad A31. once i GET the data, i can store it elsewhere and reformat the hard drive. but i have to get the data FIRST.

additionally, we are talking about a LAPTOP here as opposed to a tower. i know the caddy gets power bc other HDD units are currently working just fine as intended. thanks again

the caddy for the hard drive in question fits into the ultraslimbay port and connects through the caddy, directly to the motherboard.

it will not detect this specific hard drive even through the disk manager, although other drives detect properly.

First step, check the jumpers on the hard drives. They should both be set to Cable Select.

Or

Set the first hard drive to Master and the Second drive to Slave.

Go into your BIOS and set both hard drives to be detected automatically.

Go back into windows. It will be picked up automatically unless there is something wrong with the hard drive.

Since it sounds like you are attaching this by a USB cable using a caddy on a laptop, then ignore all the advise about setting the jumpers. They serve no function when connecting by USB. Do not reinstall the OS.

Detach the hard drive, and then go into the Control Panel and the System icon. Click on the Harware tab. Click on the Device Manager.
Find the USB section of the installed hardware listing and click on the + to open the listing to see all the USB devices. Find and uninstall any hard drives or mass storage devices listed there.
If there are no storage devices/hard drives, then uninstall everything in the USB section.
This will clear the tables which hold USB information so it will redetect the drive.
Reboot the computer then reattach the drive. Hopefully it will detect it this time.

This is common when you swap drives in a USB enclosure. Next time you plug it in, it is expect the old hard drive, so will not see the new one.

Make sure that your hard drive is physically [within the hard drive itself] is set to primary master or slave (whichever one it's plugged into]. A small tab that's not even a quarter of a centimeter long is inserted in the metal pricks that determines which one (Primary master, primary slave) it's suppose to look for. If you want the hard drive to automatically detect, remove the tab from the hard drive. Load up your BIOS on startup and check to see if it's detected.

You'll probably need to reinstall your OS, and have it recognize the drive. Even HDD's need drivers.
