...chose to use supposed settings in Claremont, Pomona & Palm Springs to replace West Hills & Santa Barbara (from the real life events) in the film? The scenes don't even look like they were shot in the places that he says they were for the most part. Of course the windmills are tell tale, but nothing else looks remotely like Claremont or Pomona. I mean, Circus liquor is in North Hollywood! I just wonder if he has ties to the San Gabriel Valley and wanted to use the names for that reason or...?

You can look this case up on True Crime. I was curious after I watched the film (it was a great movie btw), and looked into the real event. Appearantly the family did not approve of the production of the film, so he probably changed the locations to help protect them a little.
