I had both the battery and the alternator checked at AutoZone and they were ok. They said it might be the solenoid. At first it just clicked, but then somebody tightened a bolt on the solenoid and it was starting ok. Then, I left for a 3 day vacation and it won't start at all. It just makes a weird grinding noise, but the lights turn on and everything. Could the battery just not be holding a charge? Anybody have any ideas? It's a 1985 Mustang.

Pop the caps off the battery to see if its full, also check for bubbling in the fluid (that indicates a bad cell), if its low, fill it with distilled water, if its bubbling, get a new battery, another thing could be the regulator on the alternator, that doesnt get checked on the bench test....one more thing would be to check your ground wires on both the battery and the starter.

it's either the battery or alternator, really sounds like the battery could have a bad cell in it, have the battery checked out by another shop.

Alternator, battery, starter. Check them all, then go from there.

The fact it kicks in when on a charger suggests that the solonoid has increased in resistance and needs the higher charger voltage to kick into place. New solonoid.

check the starter and the spark plugs,, sometimes the plugs will make this happen,, if it is the starter you can climb under the car and hit it with a hammer and it will start right up
