I remember my mother saying this years ago (I'm 60) and also putting all the knives and forks away. It's just an old wives' tale. But DO stay away from the telephone - unless it's cordless - people have been killed when using the phone and the lines get struck. I got zapped removing a Ham Radio aerial from my rig during a storm.

In days gone by a lot of people used to cover mirrors, it was believed they could attract lightning. I'm not sure why, perhaps because people thought they were metal.
Anyway, there's no need to cover your mirrors. Lightning, for want of a better description, takes the path of least resistance (not strictly true but close enough) and mirrors are very resistant. Inside a building there's very little chance of you being affected by lightning, it does happen very occasionally but it's rare - more chance of having an accident by crossing the street.
Mirrors have long been attributed with all sorts of strange powers including gateways into other worlds and the idea of seven years bad luck if you break one.

BBC weather site recommends unplugging all unnecessary appliances and removing aerials from tvs due to possibility of power surges. I always take a torch up when I go to bed during storms in case of power cuts - I am a total wimp

its quiet correct.the light produced by a lightening is harmful to our eyes, weather you look at it in mirror or directly with naked eyes.take for example ,a welder puts a dark film glass before using the instrument.it is because of the bright light ,the neurons in eye are effected.

You could unplug the television. i've heard of folk doing this. I've never heard of covering the mirrors but if doing that makes you feel better, then why not?

A mirror is just a reflective surface. It is no more dangerous during a thunderstorm than any other reflective surface in your home.
