If you are experiencing trans. shifts while this is going on, I would say it is normal. What I suspect you are experiencing is a tach that jumps around while cruising. This either means the motor is misfiring and there is a change in the magnetic field around the coil(s) that the tach signal is connected too. If the motor is misfiring, even slightly, you will have to fix this first. If the motor is not missing, the problem can be electrical connections to the dash or a poor ground to the dash. It also can be an internal fault with the tach part of the cluster. Good luck.

normaly if your maintining a normal speed your RPMs wont change much. if you in a hilly area your RPMs will change going up hill to down. even strong gusts of wind can have some effect. the only other thing is that if your at a point where your car is switching gears. if its nothing that can be considerd normal youll want to get it looked at. i had a simalar problome and it only was a bad cable

I had the same problem with my 94 GMC Yukon and it turned out to be the ignition coil.

When it happens to mine I know it's broken because I don't hear any difference in the engine or any lurching.
