I am 30 years old and just learned I can file as legally blind. Any tips I should know about? Can I file for back exemptions?

You need to have a certificate of blindness from your doctor.

You may need to send this to IRS for verification.

To tag onto Wayne's correct answer - you can only amend the earlier returns if the documentation for your legal blindness was in effect by the end of those years.

There is an small increase in the Standard Deduction if you are blind. If you itemize deductions, there is no benefit.

If the increased Standard Deduction would benefit you, you can go back up to three years and amend your returns. You could amend 2004, 2005, and 2006 and get back a little extra money. Generally, it is too late to go back and get extra money for 2003 and prior.
