No it is not a good idea. The main problem with this is power surges but not from your power socket but your phone line. Most houses have surge protection built into them for the power sockets (i.e. trip switches/ Fuses). In a thunderstorm, if lightening hits a telephone wire on the street, part of that current can travelup the line into your modem / router and fry it. All computer manufactures tell their tech's to see if the client will admit that the phone line was plugged in during a thunderstorm, cause if the modem is fried (which will more then likely stop the pc from turning on), it is not covered by warranty as it is "an act of God".
In short, disconnect your modem / router from the phone socket in a storm or if you forgot.....don't admit it to the computer manufacture.

It's not such a good idea. BUT, if you have a surge protector (like on your extension cord) then you should be fine!
That is because if there is a storm, and you are online, if there is a power surge while you are online, it could kill your computer. By that, I mean that you could lose everything on your computer. It could also fry it.
Once again, get a surge protector if you want to be on the computer during a storm. Hope this helps!

Not me! I have a land line. I had dialup. Now it's DSL. Same line. I'm not rich. I'm in hock. Heck, I even disconnect the fancified phone (and the fancified TV). (I invite the cat in, too.)
