I need up-to-date sports photos for a website I'm designing.

I can't afford to use Getty Images or the AP (they want a minimum of $400/month)

What if I view videos of a football game or something, online, and take a screenshot during it?

Can I take the screenshot, crop it in photoshop, and use it for my website?

Why, or why not?

Thanks

No.

Still copyright violation. Have you tried istockphoto. Not sure how many sports photos they have but they are cheap.

I believe that if the pictures are of a professional sports team, all images are protected by copyright.

That is why the broadcasters usually say the disclaimer towards the end of the game that all images are the property of the National Football League and that reproduction of the material without the expressed written permission of the league is strictly prohibited.

On the other hand, if you have permission from a local city football league to take pictures and use those images on your website, there should be no problem.

One concern is if someone makes a website that causes the team logo, team name, or any individual player to be associated with a controversial product or service.

For example, if a neo-nazi group were to use Peyton Manning's photo on their website wearing the Colts jersey, lawyers for Peyton, the Indianapolis Colts, and the NFL would be gearing up for all sorts of lawsuits.

That would be copyright infringement.

The CFL, NFL, etc, have a legal copyright on all images and such, and only licensed persons/organisations can show images or broadcast video. This also includes any photos/video you purchase individually. As for photos or videos on other sites, if they are legal license holders, their images and or video are again, copyright protected.

Now, if you use publicity photos, you may be covered. Additionally, any photos you take while at a game may likely also be available for you to use how you wish...but check with the publicity department for the league(s) in question to double check.

You can face criminal and/or civil indictments should you publicise their images without license.

only way to have copyright is for YOU to actually record it live.

otherwise its copyright infringement.. i'm sure theres plenty of sites you can get royalty free images..

i bought a dvd from the shop, was like £2.. had 120,000 photo images you could use royalty free.
