It's the week in mid-June (specifically the 19th) when the people in Texas celebrate the freeing of the slaves after the Civil War. It's really an almost specifically Texan celebration, among African-Americans, but has gradually filtered out into the larger African-American community. Some suggest that it is an all-American celebration, but it really isn't. One thing that isn't well known, is the reason this is an issue at all, is because actually the Civil War ended in April, but somehow the plantation owners in Texas "forgot" to tell their slaves that they were free. That is why it really is a week of celebration, not just one day, because it took awhile for the news to get out.

It's a week in mid-June when African-Americans in Texas celebrate our ACTUAL emancipation because the word that we were freed didn't reach Texas until June.

It's a celebration of beating the **** out of people who are not black. It requires heavy drinking followed by full out rioting.
