We know for sure that their sister species, the bonobos, masturbate with their hands. Bonobos are known to use sex as a means to dissolve tension and aggression in the group. Unlike chimps, bonobos are matriarchical, and females, mostly biologically unrelated to one another, have been observed to gang up on individual males and beat them up violently, possibly casuing sever injuries that may even lead to death. But for the most part, bonobos are far less aggressive than chimps. Or better, they usually don't act out their violence; instead they have sex! Masturbation of other males or females can release a lot of tension (as any healthy human being knows from self-experience) and avoids violent encounters.

hahaha. I've never seen one masturbate, but if they can learn sign language with their hands I'm sure they can masturbate too if they are taught or shown. I'd like to see the look on a mother's face when the chimp does it in front of their kid

i believe they do.. i went to the zoo a few years ago and actually saw one masturbating.. i was shocked, but i guess the fact that they have that picture of an ape turning to a human gives enough reason why they do...
