. Lord Falconer is planning to ease overcrowding by releasing 2,000 prisoners early Yet it was only six weeks ago that the government said they wouldn't have to resort to these measures. Is this the right way to deal with the crisis? Who is to blame for the current overcrowding? Is it cost effective to the taxpayer or endangering the public?

New Labour are to blame for this overcrowding. Firstly by signing the horrendous Human Rights Act (1998) and secondly for all being corrupt and employing their benefactors and friends as Lord Chief Justices and such.

We should either reinstate capital punishment (I would vote for it) or introduce an American style system where important figures, such as Judges and Lord Falconer are voted in

If more prisons need to be built, then build them. In the mean time find alternative "accomadation"

If Lord Falconer had his way he would never imprison people. Our prisons have been getting fuller for years and years and years but the government have just ignored it - it all comes down to money.
I am hardline on crime - it should be straight to jail and our sentences are just not long enough. You can run someone over and kill them whilst being 20 times over the limit and not get put away - that is a disgrace.
The line these do-gooders use is "prison doesn't work" This puts the emphasis on what is best for the criminal and not the victim. I really don't care if prison doesn't work or not - it's about getting persistent offenders and dangerous offenders off the streets so the victims can see justice has been done and the general public are rid of this scum. Another thing I have never understood is why a prisoner get's the sentence cut for good behaviour - WHAT? It should be you always do your sentence but if you are well behaved you get to leave on time - if you are badly behaved you do extra time. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime - keep it simple.

whose fault: the government for not spotting their earlier and building more prisons.
It is totaly not the right way to deal with it. What happened to prison ships? Perhaps they should re-open all the cells they have closed because they are 'not suitable'. Prison isn't meant to be comfertable, so who cares? It is endangering the public, because this will just say to people 'you already get half the sentance you are give - now you get hardly any of it' meaning more people will commit crime.

What are these people going to do? Get them doing community work 7 days a week (like cleaning the streets, etc) or stick them in the army.

Perhaps if the government had noticed a few years ago, when all the news was saying 'prisons are getting close to full', this problem would not be here (and how, mr blair, is there less crime if there are more people in prison???)

I see two possible solutions, apart from building more prisons:

1 Cram the prisoners down the disused coal mines and disable the headgear so there is no way out.

2 Get some old ships and anchor them several miles off shore and use them as prisons. Save money on guards / wardens and anyone who can succesfully swim ashore should be released. (I suggest 30 miles offshore) Send the food supply in by helicopter.
Cherie Blair should be placed on one such ship to provide entertainment so that human rights issues are not overlooked.
I think this would work quite well.

New Labour should have built prisons years ago. Blair's ' let anyone join the E.U ' and ' let them all come to Britain ' policies have meant a great influx of people, and you don't need a crystal ball to know that some of them will be criminals, but like house building, Blair has been too busy spending the Tax payer's money rebuilding foreign countries to be bothered about Britain. Now we are paying the price for a decade of neglect.

I have to admit that I have not looked/read any other answers to your post.
I will say this - and it is only my own opinion.
The prisons are full and this fecking ar$ehole wants to release people who broke the law and were given a prison sentence an early release.

Feck him and all he stands for, the total idiot!!!

What the hell is the use of having laws in this country if this idiot is prepared to let law breakers out early?

You do the crime, do the time.....NO EXCUSES!!! NO EARLY RELEASE!!!

Build more prisons!!!!
These fecking stupid lords would look at it different it was their daughter or son etc.... who had been assaulted or god forgive murdered.

They are a fecking joke!!!

We have the same problem with over crowded prisons in the US. The cost to build new prisons is astronomical. The best solution I have seen is a Sheriff in Texas that runs a tent city for convicts.
There is a sign out front that says 'Vacancy' because they can always put up another tent.
Might work in the UK!

Falconer is a monumental t^at. Hardly surprising he is a close friend of c^nt BLiar The Traitor.

On leaving prison the burglars should be given a list of homes where all New Labour activists live, along with their working schedules, so the thieving scum will know when the homes are empty.

There are people in prison for not paying their fines. There are also people there who are mentally ill. If they were released first then the burgulars and druggies who are about to get early releases might have room to do their time.
Criminals are to blame for the current overcrowding. They do stupid crimes, get caught, then sentenced.

Many people who are placed in prison have committed minor crimes or motoring offences and have been placed within the prison systems for not paying their fines. So those in that category I see no reason why they shouldnt be released but should be punished in some other way.
