Not when you doing exactly what you describe. However I have seen flame follow the vapor trail of a person with fresh hairspray on their hair.

the flame cannot back trail into the can because there's no oxygen inside to allow combustion. It can burn back to the nozzle, melt the nozzle and burn away all the contents, possibly heating the can thereby increasing the discharge rate.

While not likely, yes it can. It would have to burn through the nozzle, to reach the contents within. It's a slim chance, in all my years it's never happened to me. But the responsible adult in my says I should tell you not to do it.

Bottom line: Don't OVERUSE it and you should be okay.
