okay so here's the thing, spycrush.net or .com installed spyware into my computer so i can buy their program to delete, i'm not willing to do that because that's unfair business and shouldnt have been done in the first place. Now i'm stuck with a pc full of spyware and no matter how much i scan and quarantine the backdoor cant be rid of. so now i want to reformat my pc but i dont have the startup disk...so i was wondering if i can use my back up files in my D drive to reboot it instead. I dont know much about computers so if anyone can help me i'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

Have you tried this?

You can't just copy files to another drive and expect it to work. Disk cloninig SW is needed, but this will also copy the virus.

Have you tried removal in Safe Mode?

If this is a brand name computer and the "D" drive is actually the "Restore" drive, then yes you can. But it would be wise to burn that "D" Partition to a set of CD's first and then do your "Restore" from these CD's.

If, on the other hand this is a standard install and you have a Windows XP disk, then you you will need to "Reinstall" your operating system for the XP disk. When loading, XP will ask if you want to delete the partition and then Re-create it. You would want to follow the instructions to do so.

Be advised, you are going to loose all of your personal files. Doing a format clears all data off of the hard drive.

You sure can. But you need your resource or recovery CD, and a copy of the OS (I amguessing Windows XP.. should have got those with your PC when new). When you start, press the F2, or F8, or F12.. depends on your PC make, to load the BIOS (grey screen) . In there you will find a section for boot sequence. Choose CD-Rom as the first choice. (Take note of teh original seqwuence for changing back later)Note which key to push to save the change. After you are succesful in restoring your computer, go back into BIOS and reset teh boot sequence as it originally was.
