I don't know how mainstream sufi music is, but I enjoy listening to it from time to time, the best collaboration in my opinion was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Eddie Vedder for the OST Dead Man Walking (http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,226191,00.html).

In the other categories, I consider the Pakistani rock music scene quite happening. There's Junoon (http://www.junoon.com), Strings (http://www.stringsonline.net), among others.

I also love the music of different countries, and quite enjoyed listening to Deep Forest's Boheme, and Comparsa (again a bit mainstream, but felt I could share these:-)).

The Cliks (they're just starting to hit with a cover of Justin Timberlake's "Oh Yeah.")

The Pipettes. (check out their awesome videos on youtube; album currently only available as an import in the U.S. but I'm sure it will get a domestic release soon.)

Any effort to spread a bit of culture is a good one.

I love Manu Chao.

Not main stream at all - but at the same time speaking straight to the heart of masses.

Juana Molina - Argentinian techno-folk. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but it really works. It's dreamy and funky and danceable and unique. Here's the link:

Great question by the way. Beats the usual "my boyfriend cheated one me" fare.

Type O Negative

Gothic tongue-in-cheek music. It's not for the easily offended, but the band is very talented.
