country boy LOL! guess where you sail has no tides or currents. I'm sure the bucket doesn't but, I am sure it has a little bit more to do with than just wind. if you are sailing at 3.5 kts against a out going 3.5 kts current; how fast are you going?

For exactly the same reason a sailboat is dead in the water if there is absolutely no air movement to be caught by the main, jib, or spinnaker sails.
