Is Magnesium Citrate as effective as castor oil in inducing labor? I am 39 weeks pregnant and in horrible pain with my feet and back. I know all about the 'a baby will come when he's ready' opinions, but at this point have reached my breaking point with the back pain and with my feet swelling and barely able to walk on them. A pharmacist told me that between the two, castor oil and magnesium citrate, the magnesium would be more effective. I took a couple tablespoons full 3 hours ago and feel nothing!!

Both magnesium citrate and castor oil are natural laxatives, but castor oil has a longer history of use and effectiveness. More midwives and mothers swear by the oil.

There's always the chance that with taking castor oil you will simply end up with cramps and diarrhea....and no labor! But I guess it's worth a try if you reaching your breaking point.

I know it's hard at the end. Maybe labor is just days away for you. It's very possible. All my babies were born at 37-38 weeks.

Best of luck!

Heavens above - why on earth were you taking advice on labour induction from a pharmacist??

If you've reached breaking point then seek the advice of a doctor or midwife - DIY inductions can have devastating consequences.

Laxatives to induce labour are dodgy at best - they will stimulate the bowel and if you do happen to go into labour (which would more than likely be just a co-incidence than anything else) you may lose all bowel control completely which isn't pleasant. Or if you overdo it you may end up with bad diahorrea and dehydration, which is no good for you or your baby.

dont try it again. Id just wait drink some water and take a long walk at the mall. Walking can help to bring the baby down, and its healthier than using drugs or taking pills to induce labor. I am 5 months pregnant and walk 1/2 mile a day. I'll do it until my due date. Its been helping with fluid retention and keeps me healthy and active.

I'm sorry, honey, but your baby isn't ready to come yet. Those kinds of things work if the baby is just about ready, but they won't start delivery if the baby isn't ready.

Every pregnant woman is just about at her wit's end with physical discomfort by the 39th week, so pamper yourself, accept pampering from your partner and family, and get what exercise you can.

My first baby sat on my sciatic nerve and I could barely move my right leg. Then he was 10 days overdue. I was going crazy... then one night my water broke. They do eventually come out!

But once he arrived it was all so worth it. Yours will be, too.

Congratulations!
