My boyfriend and I were together 4 days ago and his condom broke. I’m still about a week and a half from expecting my period (ovulating!). Yesterday, a store test was blue (positive!) My cousin’s wife is a nurse and said she will do the blood pregnancy test some time next week to give it time to run its course. What are the chances of that store test being a false positive so soon after intercourse?

It's completely impossible for me to have already been pregnant before the 15th. This is the first time for me since I was with my husband May 2006. He was killed June 2006. I haven't had sex since then.

If you really got a positive result there's no way you conceived within the last few days. You may have become pregnant from intimate sexual contact (which may or may not have included actual intercourse) on an encounter prior to this occasion.

If you used the test exactly as directed, read the result at the right time, and made sure that the test wasn't past its expiry date then there's a good chance you are pregnant, but the blood test will be able to tell you more.

Note that a blood test will only give a reliable result if it's at least 10-11 days out from intercourse - but even then youre still looking at very early days.

Sounds like, if you are pregnant, you're further along than you thought.

For a pregnancy to be detected by a HPT your hCG levels need to be at least 50mlU to 100mlU (though there are one or two tests out there on the martket that claim to be able to detect 20mlU - I have no evidence that they actually work however). At about 10 days after conception your hCG should be about 25mlU, at 12 days about 50mlU and at two weeks past conception 100mlU. At 4 days post-intercourse your hCG levels would be negligible, way too low to even show reliably on a blood test, which can pick up levels as low as 5mlU, which would be at about 7 days dpo.

Have you messed about with your boyfriend but not had actual sex before 4 days ago? It is possible to get pregnant without having actual intercourse.

Having said that, what prompted you to do a pregnancy test after just 4 days?

Was the test within its "use by" date?

Did you read the results exactly when it said to? Sometimes if you look at the test hours and hours later or even the next day you can get evaporation lines which can be misread as a positive result.

Or could you have taken some sort of medication that contained hCG for any reason?

Other than that, it is absolutely impossible to get a positive result from a home pregnancy test 4 days after sex. Even a blood test, which is more sensitive than a HPT can only be relied on after a minimum of 7 days AFTER CONCEPTION (which normally takes place a day or two after intercourse) - so after about 9-10 days minimum.

That is really soon to get a positive test. But I have never heard of anyone getting a false positive. I agree with your cousin's wife. The blood test would be the best way to go. Is it possible that you are pregnant from the previous month. Some women can still get a period when they are pregnant. I wish you the best of luck.

The only way to get a positive urine test is if the HCG hormone is in your system. That being said it is impossible to have a positive test at 4 days after sex, especially if ti was dark enough to not have any doubts whether it was an evaporation lien or not. Perhaps you were ALREADY pregnant? Condoms are not 100% effective.

It's almost impossible to have a positive result after only 4 days. Did you have intercourse a couple weeks ago? If so, i would say the positive result is from the time before this one.
You can have false positives, but usually those test are correct....i would make sure you're absolutely positive about your sexual incounters.

Sweetie, you have to face the possibility that you may be pregnant. Are you prepared to deal with that? You could take a pill right now, have it start your period, and everything would be normal again. Or you and your boyfriend can realize that you'll be forever bonded by sharing a child.

Store pregnancy tests are very accurate. I wouldn't count on a false positive.

that is quite early to get a positive if you just had sex 4 days ago, and your not expecting your period for another 9 days or so.. i would wait too, or take another test when your period is due..
the blood test will definitely confirm either way.
false positives are rare, but i have had one, but i had missed my period.. then i took a few more and all were negative as well was my blood test..

The blue tests are not as accurate as the double line varieties. However, false positives are rare. I don't know that a pregnancy test would already show up at 4 days. I would retest. I hope you get the result you want!

It's almost impossible for you to have gotten enough of the pg hormone (hcg) at this point to have gotten a positive anyhow. Normally the egg doesn't implant and you start making hcg for 6-8 days after fertilization.
