Male and female manatees are actually called "bulls" and "cows," respectively, since manatees themselves are also known as "sea cows." Accordingly, babies are called "calves" and groups of manatees constitute a "herd." The word "manatee" comes from a native word meaning "breast," and does not refer to "man."
