It would be ok but you would have to make sure that it is extremely clean before you put the RES in. Another suggestion... if you have any larger aquarium stores close by many of them sell a wide selection of tank cleaners that work really well and are far safer than bleach.

Two of our tanks are re-used fish tanks. We did a simple 1/10 bleach water solution. Then rinsed it thoroughly let it sit 24 hrs rinsed it out again until you can't smell any chemicals. It will kill anything and then cleaning out the bleach.
Any diseases in a used tank will be killed using bleach just make sure its a mild bleach water solution not pure bleach. Then rinse it very very well.
Good luck!

I think it would be OK just make sure you dilute the bleach with water and rise it out really good when you are done. For my lizard's cage I would always put a cap full of bleach in and then fill it almost all the way full with water. You only need a little bleach to wash the whole cage!

bleaching it out is ok if you flush it out continuously..however I do not recommend you put the RES in there immediately after you bleach it..wait about a 2-3 days and then rinse again. Then I would consider it safe...I put my fish into a used tank that I bleached and they are still alive and well 1 year later!

4 oz to 1 gallon
2 oz to 1/2 gallon
1 oz to 1/4th gallon
will kill everything down to the smallest microbe. rinse till all the smell is gone. but if you still have a concern about using bleach as some do. if you ensure the tank is dry put a heat lamp or something to raise the temp in the empty tank to 110 degrees for 12 hours will kill most everything. bacteria and algeas cannot live in dry conditions but the tank must be cleaned with dish soap or something before hand to remove dirt and such. 10 minutes after you place your turtles in there their bacteria will begin to multiply but it will be their bacteria that they have an immunity to.

i would look for a breeder tank that is 45 or 55 gallons. that way it it is wider and longer than a regular 55. and yes its fine to bleach it out as long as you let it air dry!! getting a reptile tank cleaner also will work fine but it smells toxic and i cough when i use it!

it's ok to get one and bleach it out with a very diluted mixture of bleach and water. just make sure it doesn't smell like bleach when you put the turtles in! there is also a product called "healthy habitat" that i use for cleaning. you can buy it on petsolutions. com

Its not a bad idea, however they do sell special tank cleaners at pet stores that may be better suited to what it is you are trying to do.
