I am in Central NC, the temperature here is crazy. It was in the 60's last week and this week it is getting up to 97 degrees. I am looking to put the plants in an area (in front and against the house) that most people put shrubs/bushes. It is in direct sunlight until late in the evening.

try some ornamental grass and begonias. the red ones with green leaves are the only ones that thrive in the sunlight. if you dont like that, then find a nursery and go look at what they have.

Anything that is in a pot. It is too late to start seed, but you can plant anything already in a container.
