Why should it? I like things exactly the way they are. A cap would ruin baseball imo. It's not about the money you spend, ie the NYY, but how you construct a team. The Braves have won on a budget, the Marlins have won on a budget, the D-Backs have won on a budget. Even look at last year, Detroit and St. Louis in the big show. What are the advantages of a cap? It just means the league gets watered down like the NBA, NHL, and NFL.
spydur3 - I definitely can agree with that. Baseball does need a floor (minimum) for every team to meet.

Because the player's union has way too much power. It is also because all the teams are making money. But don't worry, the day will come when teams like the Royals and D-rays are bankrupt and force the issue. But as long as the teams are making money, it won't happen. Eventually, the player's union will back down because what will these players do without baseball? Get a regular job, they will settle, same as the other sports.

Baseball doesn't have a salary cap because the players union is stronger than the mob and the teamsters combined...they are regularly recognized as the strongest union in America, and if you had that much power, would you vote to lower your salary??

Until the sport as a whole starts seeing their revenue decrease, you will not a cap. The luxury tax that they have does hit teams who spent frivolously and I'm fine with that. What they need is a spending minimum so that team owners are not allowed to pocket the profit for not trying to field a competitive team.

there is a cap. Whatever a palyer is worth as determined by what an owner is willing to pay. the way it should be in all sports. Nobody's gonna pay a nickle to watch the owners play. But oh do they complain. If they can't offered it then the shouldn't pay it -- that's the cap.

Because the players have the strongest union in all sports.
When football players strike, there are replacement players available who are almost as good. When baseball players strike, minor leaguers don't cross the line, and the only available players are ridiculously unqualified.
