My friend carried a baby with Trisomy 18 until 38 weeks and then the baby died. She was very depressed and said she didn't want to have anyother children, she just had 1 daughter. She got pregnant accidentaly a few months later and the due date was within weeks of the child she had lost. It was a little boy again, but this baby was fine. He's 2 now and perfectly healthy. Trisomy 18, is like Trisomy 21 (Downs syndrome) meaning it's a total fluke.

I've no idea what trisomy 18 is? But I lost a baby at 16 weeks had a D & C at the time and went on to have a perfectly healthy baby boy who is now 24 years old. The doctor would have told you if you were going to have any further problems, so I take it they didn't? Don't worry, it just happens sometimes. I did panic a bit when I concieved my son, so I stopped smoking and all drinking of alcohol just incase it happened the second time. I did it before I even fell pregnant, I also took all my naps and eat a sensible diet. Good luck, and stop worrying, the doctor would have said if there was going to be a problem.

Trisomy 18 is not a genetically linked chromosomal malfunction - ie: it does not run in families, it is spontaneous.

So your chances of having a perfectly healthy, normal baby next time are pretty much the same as anyone else.

I have nursed several patients who have lost Trisomy 18 babies and gone on to have successful pregnancies and deliveries and healthy infants.

Good luck.
